It's 8:06 am, Saturday. I awoke to the fuzzy sound of the radio. It was 6:45 am. Trying to remember the song that was playing, as I always do, I just wiped the sleep off my eyes. I looked to the window and could see the blue of morning through the curtain. I lifted it, just to give me the incentive to get up. I go about my morning routine, almost in a robotic state. I could do everything with my eyes closed. I make the coffee in the percolator and turn on the T.V. I put on a Star Wars movie and just sit and wait for the percolator to start bubbling.
My breakfast is Vector cereal and 2 sausage sandwiches. This morning's coffee is just right for once. After finishing, I turn on the PC and check my Facebook. Not much interest. I log into NAP with anticipation. There are no notifications. So, disappointed, I check my account and profile and it remains the same as the last time I logged in. And here I am writing a diary for anyone who cares to read.

I'm on my second cup of Maxwell House. The movie is about halfway through. Very quiet this morning, except for the sound of the furnace vents. It's been constant for two months. Normally, I shut it off periodically, but the weather's been colder and harsher this winter. If this home was built with a chimney and wood stove, I'd be out there in the woods getting some prime trees to bring home. I miss those days when my dad and I would go out there, trudging in the deep snow. No matter how cold it was, we were out there. We'd take turns cutting the trees and we'd haul the logs to the roadside together. We were a great team.
But, he's been gone. It's been nearly seven years now. I still miss the ol' man. I almost feel that he looks down on me, shaking his head, wondering why I'm not out there in the woods. Well, what can I do? This modernized reservation, with its new chief and council, will only build houses fitted with electric furnaces. Why is that?

As if I don't know. We've simply become too modernized and dependent on technology. It's almost unheard of that wood heat is still being used. I'm sure the band council would think it's ludicrous if I asked for a chimney. But, I'd install it myself and get my own wood stove. And I wouldn't need their help in getting firewood. They'd probably buy the wood from outsiders who charge a small fortune for a load. Yeah, I'd be one happy lumberjack, whistling and singing away in the woods. Just me and my trusty saw and axe. The way it should be.
I suppose, for now, I'll keep myself busy with my writing and creating music. I wanna save enough money to pay for my next demo recording. This new song is going to do it for me. I know it. It's the best one I've written so far, I don't mind saying. People who've heard it say that it should be on the radio. That really encouraged and motivated me. So, I think it's gonna happen. I'm grateful to the Creator for these gifts. And I'm grateful for today. Until next time.
